Mosaic Process
Stained glass is purchased in multiple sizes depending on the art being created. I started out using the parts of glass not utilized by artists doing stained glass windows and believe this is a good medium for beginning artists. Glass shards can be purchased at Stained Glass shops or on eBay. See below for a picture of my first purchase of mosaic glass shards. I just needed to clean, separate by color and start my
first mosaic!
Once I entered an actual stained-glass shop for the first time, I was like a kid in a candy shop. I wanted everything! The advantage of purchasing actual sheets of glass or portions of, you can get the specific colors that you need plus the movement of the glass and color variations may work perfectly for you. The picture above of the beautiful sheet of blue glass that will be used on many projects for my clients in the future. Please note that it isn’t necessary to buy this large of a piece as the stained-glass shop will cut the glass in the size you need. I simply fell in love with the sheet and couldn’t walk away.
If you are new to mosaics, all I can say is have fun. If available, take a class or watch the many videos available on YouTube. I tell my students to let their inner child come out and play. If you glue a piece down and don’t like it, it’s easy to remove. My first few mosaics were simply random cuts of glass glued in an unstructured palate. Somewhat like modern art but not as sophisticated! Just have fun.
